Jesus At The Well
May 1, 2024 by Logan Gassett
Getting stuck in your thoughts, overthinking, and drowning in anxiety is hard. It’s also hard to watch someone that you love struggle with that. I can honestly say that I’ve been on both sides! Maybe you’re in a place in life where it’s all just too much; healing from loss, a change in a relationship, financial stress, and who knows what else. But this piece of Proverbs gives me clarity, despite how murky my life gets and maybe it’ll help you too. Proverbs 20:5 “5 A person's thoughts are like water in a deep well, but someone with insight can draw them out.” Wells are mentioned throughout the Bible. They are seen as a gathering place for communities and Jesus met people at wells for significant teaching moments too. Jesus talked with a Samaritan woman in John 4 and this moment is a perfect example because, at the well where they spoke, Jesus used His insight. He knew her history and changed her perception. Spending time alone with Jesus and surrendering those thoughts to be changed is so important, whether it’s pen to paper or praying out loud. I don’t know how deep your well is, how far your thoughts and struggles go. But, Jesus does. He meets us in those deep waters and helps us draw out those thoughts so that we can change our hearts and what we thirst for. Sometimes, the one drawing out those thoughts is a person or a friend who Jesus sent our way. Because of their obedience, they help out as the hands and feet of Jesus. That’s why spending time with God’s people in community is also very important. Maybe you’re on the other side of things; life is better than it used to be and you’ve made it through some tough times with a testimony of God’s goodness. If that’s the case, your insight is a tool. Ready to be used. But no matter where you are, I hope this encourages you to know that Jesus is always there to meet you at your well and change your perspective.
