Pointing the Way
October 2, 2024 by Brent McCoy
Many moons ago, when I was in high school, I was a point guard on the basketball team. My senior year, I was the starting point guard for the mighty Picher Gorillas. I was a menace on the court, averaging a colossal FOUR POINTS A GAME. Yes, I needed to be dealt with. One team, the Fairland Owls, had a unique approach. I am a towering 5'8, and in high school, I weighed about 165 pounds. Huge. The Owls went man-to-man on defense. As I brought the ball up the court, I looked up to see this guy named Doug guarding me. This guy was a man among children out there. Dude's 6'5. One of my first possessions, however, I was about to drive around Doug for a layup. "Nice," I thought, "I can do this all night!". On my next attempt, Doug swatted the ball so hard, that it ended up in the 4th row. That was that. Fortunately, for me, I had a LOT of other guys on the team that were scorers. These guys could get BUCKETS...so I didn't have to. MY PRIMARY JOB was to get the ball to guys that were better than me. I feel like I did that pretty well. My job was not to score. It was to recognize the others that could. In my chronological Bible reading, I read about John the Baptist. This is someone who knew what his job was. By all accounts, he was a great preacher. His messages were awakening people to the need for repentance and baptism. He had numerous followers. When people asked him, "Are you the Savior? Are you the One we have been waiting for?" John said, "No. I'm just one who was called to point you towards the REAL ONE. When HE shows up, you'll know. I am not even worthy to tie His shoes." John pointed people to Jesus. He never called people to follow him. He told people to follow Jesus. For some of John's followers, that's exactly what happened...and he never complained. Now...I am not comparing myself to John the Baptist. What I hope you can see is that sometimes, it is not our job to "score", but it is our job to point people to Jesus. Make sure that you get the ball to the One who others should pay attention to.
